Dear Friends,
Our times do not offer an easy path for those who wish to reject a false dualism, and instead seek a middle path—the path of balance, the path of Christ.
The way forward along this path is often misunderstood, and seldom, if ever, fashionable in the eyes of the world. (I’m OK with that, this is well known, but perhaps it bears repeating . . .) It’s prone to attack from all “sides” of any and every illusory polarity.
Still, it’s my conviction that, for our modern world, the example of Rudolf Steiner’s life and the deep and fertile possibilities for the further development of his work in the world are the most valuable and thorough contributions to this “middle way” in our time. It negates nothing that is true, but shines a friendly light on what is real. It challenges us to grow in both knowledge and character, thereby developing the courage to stand, alone if need be, in first recognizing and then letting go of the world’s delusory pretenses, thus freeing ourselves to set to work for the good.
To begin with, this is the path, in a way, of greatest—not least—resistance.
But with a light heart, love, and good humor, it has its own rewards, despite being misunderstood or even slandered, more or less as a matter of course; and despite being seen—by some at least—as somehow, perennially, out-of-fashion.
Other causes have their moments, and there are no doubt many that are worthy—fashionable or not. At SteinerBooks, we are unswervingly dedicated to making Rudolf Steiner’s works available—and understandable—to contemporary, intelligent readers (thinkers and doers) who somehow seek a middle path.
I meet such people everywhere I go, frequently in settings where Steiner’s work is largely unknown, and I find myself making the case again and again that for any true self-reckoning of the world in which we live to take place, Rudolf Steiner’s life and work must be seriously considered by intelligent people of goodwill—and I find that there are many more of these than we are sometimes led to believe.
The works do stand for themselves—when read and understood—and we are so grateful to each and every friend who responds to our weekly emails through notes or, of course, buying the books we publish and distribute. And each year around this time we write a letter asking for further help in the form of freely-given monetary gifts.
As a non-profit publisher, grants, donations, and bequests are essential for our continued work. We continue to publish new and newly revised works of Rudolf Steiner, as well as other new books, while keeping numerous spiritually valuable though low-selling books in-print and widely available, ready to be discovered by new readers. While many of the book projects we undertake do not produce an immediate financial profit, we aim to keep this endeavor alive for years to come.
Those few of us who have found our work here, without exception, love this work we do and are convinced that it has the potential to help change the world for the better—that it in fact has already done so to a degree, and has still much more to do.
Yes, in some ways it is perhaps not fashionable, not that we care much about that, but maybe it’s just that the world hasn’t yet caught up to the works of Rudolf Steiner that we publish, promote, and have, in various ways, devoted our lives to. Until it does, we do need the support of those whose hearts are in harmony with our mission.
Funds in support of The Collected Works of Rudolf Steiner in English project are particularly needed now, and any contribution, great or small, will be received, as always, with immense joy and gratitude. Those wishing to further this work into the future might consider remembering SteinerBooks in their will. For this and any other questions or thoughts or concerns, I am always open to talk.
Thank you for reading, thank you for being a reader, and for all of your support.
